How do you take a nicotine pouch for the first time? Slip one under the upper lip, let it sit, breathe through the first minute, then bin it after 20 to 30 minutes. I built OutDare after years of brown snus that stained and pouches that scorched the gum, so the ritual matters to me as much as the milligrams. Start at 6 mg, do not chew, do not swallow the pouch. Key Insight Explanation
Start at the lowest strength A first-timer coming off brown snus or a stronger brand usually settles faster on a lower-mg pouch and can move up if the hold does not last.
Upper lip, not the lower Modern all-white pouches are designed to sit against the gum of the upper lip, tucked to one side, not chewed and not moved around.
Twenty to thirty minutes, then out That window covers most of what the pouch releases; keeping it in longer gives you very little extra and encourages you to swallow more saliva.
A warming tingle is normal A brief warming sensation for the first minute is part of the format; a sharp throat burn or a heavy drip is a sign the paper or the fill is not right for you.

How do you take a nicotine pouch for the first time?

Take one 6 mg pouch, tuck it high under your upper lip on one side, leave it completely still, and remove it after 20 to 30 minutes into the pocket on the underside of the can lid. That is the whole move. Everything below is why each step matters.

The six-step first pouch

  • Pick the lower strength for can one. A 6 mg nicotine pouch is where a first-timer starts. 12 mg exists for later, when 6 does not hold the morning.
  • Shape it briefly between finger and thumb. A quick pinch flattens the pouch so it sits without a bulge.
  • Upper lip, one side. Slide it in above the gum, off to the left or right of your front teeth. Not the lower lip, not centred.
  • Leave it alone. No chewing, no shuffling with your tongue, no swallowing it whole. Talk, work, drive: do nothing to it.
  • Expect a warming tingle in the first minute. That is the burn landing. It settles within two or three minutes.
  • Remove at 20 to 30 minutes. Lift the pouch out, drop it into the pocket on the underside of the lid, close the can.

Pro Tip: Skip food and drink for the first three or four minutes after you place a pouch. Anything hot or acidic washes flavour and nicotine down your throat, which is where a first session goes from a warming tingle to a scratchy one.

One pouch, one side, one sitting. If you finish and want another, wait until the tingle from the first has faded. A first-timer chasing a bigger hit by doubling up in the first hour is how a decent pouch gets remembered as a rough one.

Why do most first-timers get the ritual wrong?

Most first-timers get the ritual wrong because they bring the reflexes of whatever they used last: brown snus, or a pouch brand that scorches the throat. Both of those products train specific habits, and both sets of habits make a modern all-white pouch feel worse than it actually is.

The two wrong reflexes

  • The brown-snus reflex. Loose or portioned brown sits under the lower lip, and it is meant to drip. You expect a brown line, you expect to spit, and you sit it low so the run does not reach your teeth. Move that habit onto an all-white pouch and you get a slack fit, a wet mouth, and nicotine going where it should not.
  • The burn-brand reflex. A pouch that scorches the throat teaches you that scorch equals working. You place it aggressively, you leave it in for an hour to prove you can, and you read the raw gum in the morning as normal.

Neither reflex serves an all-white pouch built on high-grade pouch paper with a plant-fibre filling. There is nothing brown to drip. There is a burn under the lip, but it is not a throat burn, and if you feel one it usually means the pouch has slid, the paper has taken a knock, or you have been shifting it around with your tongue.

What a bad first pouch usually looks like

  • Placed on the lower lip out of habit, so the seal is loose and the whole thing feels like leaking snus.
  • Chewed to speed up the hit, which floods the mouth and drags nicotine down the throat.
  • Left in for 45 minutes to an hour, well past the point where the pouch has given what it had.
  • Chased with a coffee straight away, which pulls flavour down and leaves an aftertaste that gets blamed on the pouch.

Change the position, leave it still, and time the removal. The pouch has not changed; the ritual has.

What does independent research say about how pouches are used?

Independent bodies describe modern nicotine pouches, at category level, as small tobacco-free sachets placed under the upper lip for a limited window and then discarded. Two named sources are worth reading directly: Action on Smoking and Health (ASH UK) and the Royal College of Physicians.

What ASH UK describes

ASH UK's briefing on nicotine pouches describes them as tobacco-free oral products containing nicotine, flavourings and plant-based fillers, sold in cans and used by placing a single pouch between the gum and the upper lip. ASH describes the category as an adult product, and it describes each pouch as time-limited: put in, kept still, taken out. The briefing is written for public-health readers, not as a buying guide, so it explains the mechanics and leaves the choice to the user.

What the Royal College of Physicians describes

The Royal College of Physicians' 2016 report "Nicotine without smoke" is broader than pouches. Its useful contribution here is the distinction it draws between nicotine and the smoke that carries it in a cigarette. The RCP frames nicotine on its own as a stimulant used by adults, and non-combustible formats as a distinct product category from tobacco that is burned. That is a statement about the category, not about any brand inside it.

Where both sources agree on the ritual

Element What ASH UK and the RCP describe
Format All-white sachet, tobacco-free filling, single use
Placement Between the gum and the upper lip
Duration A defined window per pouch, then removed
Audience Adults only

Read against those descriptions, the steps in the first section are not a brand ritual invented for marketing: upper lip, still, timed removal, one pouch at a time. That is how the category is used, as described by people who do not sell it.

What changes when you come from brown snus or a burning pouch?

The drip stops, the stain on the lip goes, and the warming burn stays without scorching the throat. That is what actually shifts when you move from brown snus, or from a pouch brand that felt like sandpaper, to an all-white tobacco-free pouch built for the same ritual under the lip.

Brown snus works because the tobacco leaf itself carries the flavour and the moisture. That is also why it drips, why it stains, and why the aftertaste sits on the teeth for hours after you have spat it out. A white pouch removes the leaf from the equation: what stays is a fibre cushion loaded with nicotine salt and flavour. Get the paper and the fill right and the feed is slow and even. Get them wrong and you get the burning throat, the lip sting, the flavour that dies inside ten minutes.

The three things you stop noticing

  • The drip. All-white pouches do not release brown liquid. Saliva stays clear, the lip stays dry, the collar of your shirt stays clean.
  • The aftertaste. No tobacco means no tobacco note lingering after the pouch is out. The mint fades, and that is it.
  • The throat. A calibrated burn warms the gum; it does not scrape the back of the throat. If a pouch is scorching you, that is a fault of that pouch, not a rule of the format.

Where OutDare fits, in one honest paragraph

The OutDare Nicotine Pouches are built around high-grade pouch paper that stays shut under the lip, a plant-fibre filling in place of tobacco leaf, and natural flavours developed with a former mixologist. Xylitol carries most of the sweetness, which is how we cut most of the sucralose. The mint took six months to land and is called Rad Mint. Two strengths on the shelf, 6 mg and 12 mg, both cans at €7.00, and every order is charged in EUR at checkout wherever you live.

Pro Tip: Give your gum a week off the brown before you judge the white. The old taste memory is loud; it needs a few days to quiet down before a mint pouch reads as mint, and not just as "not tobacco".

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you swallow the juice from a nicotine pouch?

You will swallow a little saliva and that is fine, but do not chew the pouch open and do not gulp. Swallowing large amounts of the released liquid tends to cause nausea and hiccups in first-timers, which is why the pouch is designed to stay shut under the lip.

How long do you keep a nicotine pouch in for the first time?

Between 20 and 30 minutes for the first one. Most of what the pouch has to give is released in that window. If you feel light-headed before then, take it out early: a first pouch is a calibration, not an endurance test.

Where exactly do you place a nicotine pouch?

Under the upper lip, tucked to one side, against the gum. Slide it in with a clean finger, press it once so it sits flat, and leave it alone. Moving it around, biting it or shuttling it side to side stops it working the way it is designed to.

What strength should a first-timer choose?

The lower strength on offer. OutDare starts at 6 mg per pouch, which is the sensible first can for someone coming off brown snus or a milder pouch brand. Move to 12 mg only if 6 mg does not hold your morning after a few days.

Does the first pouch have to burn?

A brief warming tingle for the first minute is normal and expected: it is the format landing under the lip. A sharp, lingering throat burn is not the same thing and usually points to a harsher paper or a higher strength than a first-timer needs.

Can you eat or drink with a pouch in?

Not straight away. Give the first few minutes to the pouch itself, then a sip of water is fine. Hot drinks, fizzy drinks and heavy meals tend to soften the paper and cause more drip, so most people wait until the pouch is out.

How many pouches a day is normal at the start?

Fewer than you think. Two or three in a day is common for a first-timer, spaced out with a proper break between them. Cramming five in the first afternoon is how people get the head-spin and decide the format is not for them.

What do you do with the pouch after use?

Take it out, put it in the small compartment inside the lid of the can, and bin the can when it fills up. Do not flush pouches and do not leave used ones on a table where a child or a pet could reach them. Adults only.

So the whole first-time ritual comes down to four moves: pick 6 mg, tuck it under the upper lip to one side, leave it still for 20 to 30 minutes, then bin it in the lid. Breathe through the warming minute, do not chew, do not swallow the pouch, and keep the first day to two or three, well spaced. If you are coming from brown snus or a pouch that burned your throat, the change is what is not there anymore: no drip, no stain, no scorch. Start your first can on our nicotine pouches page.
